Antibiotic Allergy

چکیده
Although allergic reactions to antibiotics account for only a small proportion of reported adverse drug reactions, they are associated with substantial morbidity and mortality and increased health care costs.1-3 Estimates of the prevalence of antibiotic allergy vary widely.1-3 Any organ may be affected, but the skin is most commonly involved. Data from the Boston Collaborative Drug Surveillance Program1 indicate a 2.2 percent frequency of cutaneous drug reactions among hospitalized patients, with the antibiotics amoxicillin, trimethoprim–sulfamethoxazole, and ampicillin the most commonly implicated agents. More recently, a six-month prospective analysis in France showed a prevalence of cutaneous drug eruptions of 3.6 per 1000 hospitalized patients; antibiotics accounted for 55 percent of cases.4

Adverse reactions associated with therapeutic antibiotic use after penicillin skin testing.
BACKGROUND There is little prospective data on the antibiotics prescribed and the adverse reactions associated with their use after penicillin skin testing. OBJECTIVE Provide data on antibiotic use and new antibiotic "allergy" incidence after penicillin skin testing. METHODS All patients who had penicillin skin testing at our Medical Center between 1-1-2000 and 12-31-2004 were followed thro...
متن کاملProbiotic or Conventional Yogurt for Treating Antibiotic-associated Diarrhea: A Clinical Trial Study
Background The popularity of probiotics is on the rise. Despite the beneficial effects of antibiotics, gastrointestinal health is at risk of diarrhea. This study aimed to investigate whether probiotic yogurt is of capability to prevent the incidence of diarrhea versus conventional yogurt. Materials and Methods This controlled, randomized, double-blind trial was designed to recruit 48 hospitali...
متن کاملUpdate on the Management of Antibiotic Allergy
Drug allergy to antibiotics may occur in the form of immediate or non-immediate (delayed) hypersensitivity reactions. Immediate reactions are usually IgE-mediated whereas non-immediate hypersensitivity reactions are usually non-IgE or T-cell mediated. The clinical manifestations of antibiotic allergy may be cutaneous, organ-specific (e.g., blood dyscracias, hepatitis, interstitial nephritis), s...
متن کاملImproving Antimicrobial Stewardship by Antibiotic Allergy Delabeling: Evaluation of Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices Throughout the Emerging Infections Network
Antibiotic allergy testing (AAT) practices of Emerging Infections Network infectious disease physicians were surveyed. Although AAT was perceived to be necessary for removal of inappropriate or unnecessary allergy labels, there was limited access to any form of testing. In this study, we discuss current antibiotic allergy knowledge gaps and the development of AAT practices within antimicrobial ...

BACKGROUND In selected inpatient settings, penicillin skin testing has been shown to affect antibiotic use. Routine penicillin skin testing has not been studied in hospitalized patients with a history of penicillin allergy. OBJECTIVES To determine whether routine penicillin skin testing at a large regional hospital affected antibiotic use and/or antibiotic side effects in hospitalized persons...
